What Is Muscle Testing — And How Does Biomagnetism Use It?

If you’ve ever explored kinesiology, you’ll already have a sense of what muscle testing is. But the way we use it in Biomagnetism is distinct enough that it’s worth exploring in its own right — both what it shares with applied kinesiology, and where the two approaches part ways.

The Basics: What Is Muscle Testing?

Muscle testing is a way of accessing information stored in the body’s unconscious intelligence. While our conscious minds may not always be able to recall or articulate what’s happening inside us, the unconscious mind keeps a continuous, meticulous record — of every experience, every physical process, every shift in energy or emotional state.

Muscle testing works by asking the body questions that generate a binary, yes/no response. It taps into what’s known as an autonomic physiological reflex — the same class of involuntary, automatic responses that govern things like the pupillary reaction to light, the knee-jerk reflex, and galvanic changes in skin conductance. These reflexes are routinely tested in clinical medicine, and the same principle underpins muscle testing.

The unconscious mind — and the information it holds — doesn’t sit in one identifiable place in the brain. It is distributed throughout the body and its surrounding energy field. A useful way to picture this is the classic iceberg analogy: the conscious mind is the small portion visible above the water, while the vast unconscious wisdom sits beneath the surface, held within an interconnected field that extends beyond the physical body. It is within this shared field that muscle testing operates — connecting practitioner and subject in a way that allows the body’s own intelligence to be read.

Applied Kinesiology: The Foundations

Applied kinesiology (AK) was developed in the 1960s by chiropractor Dr. George Goodheart. He observed that specific muscles appeared to be functionally linked to organs, glands, and meridians — and that weakness in a muscle could indicate dysfunction elsewhere in the body.

In AK, muscle testing is used as a broad diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Practitioners might assess structural alignment, nutritional needs, emotional imbalances, or responses to specific substances — typically by observing whether an extended arm holds firm or gives way under gentle pressure. The system is highly adaptable and is used across a wide range of disciplines, including chiropractic, naturopathy, nutritional therapy, and kinesiology.

Autonomic Response Testing (ART)

Building on the foundations of applied kinesiology, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt developed Autonomic Response Testing (ART) — a more refined and structured approach to muscle testing that integrates the autonomic nervous system more explicitly into the assessment process.

ART uses a combination of muscle testing and biofeedback to assess the body’s response to a wide range of stressors: toxins, pathogens, emotional blocks, and more. A key feature of ART is the use of “resonance testing” — where substances, vials, or even the practitioner’s own intention are introduced into the body’s field to see how the system responds. Dr. Klinghardt also developed the concept of using a “signal enhancer” — a trained practitioner — to amplify the body’s response when it is too subtle to read easily.

ART is widely used in integrative and functional medicine settings and represents a significant evolution in how muscle testing can be applied in a clinical context. For many practitioners, it bridges the gap between the more intuitive roots of applied kinesiology and a more systematic, repeatable methodology.

How Muscle Testing Is Used in Biomagnetism

In Biomagnetism, muscle testing serves a very specific purpose: it is used as a navigational tool to locate the precise biomagnetic pairs that need to be addressed in a session.

The Biomagnetism system — developed by Dr. Isaac Goiz Durán — maps over 300 specific points on the body, arranged in pairs. Each pair corresponds to a pH imbalance: one point in the pair holds a positive charge (more alkaline), and the other holds a negative charge (more acidic). When the body is out of balance, these pH differentials can create an environment where pathogens — bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites — are able to thrive.

The practitioner’s job is to identify which pairs are active in a given session. Magnets are placed at specific anatomical locations on the body, and the practitioner uses muscle testing to detect a response — indicating that a particular pair is active and needs to be addressed.

The Science Behind the Response: Magnetoception

What makes the Biomagnetism approach to muscle testing distinctive is the specific physiological mechanism that underlies it — a phenomenon known as magnetoception.

Just as proprioception allows the body to sense the location of its own parts without looking, magnetoception is the body’s ability to perceive and respond to magnetic fields. It is best understood in migratory animals, which use an internal magnetic sense to navigate by the Earth’s field. Recent research suggests that humans also possess a form of magnetoception, likely mediated by magnetite crystals present in the body’s tissues.

When a magnet is applied to an area of the body where the magnetic field is already altered — due to a pH imbalance — it triggers an automatic reflex in the form of a muscular contraction. This is the signal that Biomagnetism practitioners are trained to detect.

The sequence looks like this:

  1. A pH imbalance is present in the body
  2. The body detects this and attempts to compensate
  3. This compensation distorts the local magnetic field
  4. Placing a magnet over the affected area amplifies the distortion
  5. The brain registers this and triggers an involuntary muscular contraction — readable by the practitioner

How the Techniques Differ in Practice

This is where the methods diverge most clearly — not just in theory, but in what the session actually looks like.

In applied kinesiology and ART, muscle testing is typically performed using an outstretched arm. The practitioner applies gentle downward pressure while the client holds their arm horizontal, and observes whether the muscle holds or gives way. This can be done in response to a wide range of inputs — touch, substances, spoken statements, or emotional associations.

In Biomagnetism, we use a different physical indicator entirely. Rather than an extended arm, we compare the length of the legs. The client lies face-up on the treatment table, and the practitioner holds the feet and observes any change in leg length as a magnet is placed at each scanning point on the body. If a shortening of the right leg is observed, this indicates an active biomagnetic pair at that location.

When working alone — in self-treatment — the same principle applies, but arm length is used instead, as this is easier to observe independently.

Why the Right Side?

The right-sided response isn’t arbitrary. When a magnet is placed on an imbalanced point, it triggers the left lobe of the brain — the hemisphere responsible for coordinating movement and muscle contraction on the right side of the body. What appears to be a shortening of the right leg is actually a whole-body muscular contraction on the right hemi-body, in much the same way the body might withdraw from a painful stimulus. The leg comparison simply makes that contraction visible and measurable.

This is a meaningful distinction. In Biomagnetism, we are not asking the body to resist or yield to manual pressure — we are observing an involuntary response to magnetic stimulation. The practitioner is a reader of that response, not a force being exerted against.

A More Objective Signal — And Why That Matters

One of the most common things people say when they first encounter Biomagnetism muscle testing is how clear it feels. Either the legs are the same length, or they aren’t. There is no grey area to interpret, no question of whether that was a genuine weakening or simply a slight shift in the pressure applied. The body either responds or it doesn’t.

This is quite different from the experience of arm testing in AK and ART, where the signal can be more subtle and the boundary between “held” and “gave way” can feel genuinely ambiguous — particularly when you’re learning, or when working with clients whose responses are less pronounced. That ambiguity isn’t a flaw in those systems, but it does mean that traditional muscle testing can feel like an art form that takes considerable time and confidence to master.

I’ll be honest: I actually really struggle with the more traditional styles of muscle testing. The subtlety of reading an arm response never quite clicked for me in the way that Biomagnetism did. The moment I encountered the leg-length comparison, something shifted — it felt measurable, observable, and far less dependent on my own interpretation. I’ve heard this echoed by many students and practitioners over the years, particularly those who had tried AK or ART and felt they simply “couldn’t do” muscle testing.

If that’s you — if you’ve been drawn to this way of working but put off by past experiences of finding muscle testing difficult to read — it’s worth knowing that Biomagnetism often lands differently. The response the body gives is distinct enough that most people find it accessible from early in their training, even when other methods haven’t felt that way.

What the Approaches Share

Beneath these differences in technique, AK, ART, and Biomagnetism rest on the same foundational premise: the body’s neuromuscular system carries information that isn’t always accessible through conventional means — and that information can be systematically read to guide therapeutic work.

All three approaches treat the body as an intelligent, self-communicating system. All three use involuntary physical responses as their primary data source. And all three require the practitioner to develop sensitivity, consistency, and a settled presence — because the quality of the signal depends in part on the quality of the attention being brought to it.

Why This Is Relevant for Kinesiologists and ART Practitioners

If you already work with muscle testing — whether in an AK or ART context — Biomagnetism may feel both immediately familiar and genuinely new.

The skill of reading the body’s response is one you already have. What Biomagnetism offers is a specific, structured framework within which to apply it: a defined map of biomagnetic pairs, a clear understanding of the pH science behind each one, and a sequential scanning protocol that guides every session.
